Occupational Stress
Occupational stress is the negative psychological and physical effects that an employee experiences due to the responsibilities, environment, or other pressures of the workplace. The causes of professional stress vary from person to person, but the following are some common examples
- High work demands can lead to stress.
- Low work control that is if employees feel that they have no say in how their work is done or when it is done.
- Lack of support from coworkers, supervisors, and the organization. Or if employees feel isolated or unsupported.
- If employees feel that they are unable to meet the demands of all of their roles.
- Poor work-life balance can lead to stress
Symptoms of Occupational Stress
- Emotional symptoms: Anxiety, irritability, depression, mood swings, burnout
- Physical symptoms: Fatigue, headaches, stomach problems, muscle tension, difficulty sleeping
- Behavioral symptoms: Changes in eating habits, substance abuse, social withdrawal, absenteeism, presenteeism
